MAYPORT - Capt. Robert Wirth, commodore of Submarine Squadron 20, presents Cmdr. Enrique Vargas, captain of Peruvian Submarine BAP Arica (SS-36), with a commemorative photo of the Kings Bay submarine fleet after a closing ceremony held at Naval Station Mayport, Fl. The Peruvian and U.S. Navies celebrated 89 days of joint operations with the Arica (SS-36) from July to October 2018 as part of the Diesel-Electric Submarine Initiative (DESI) program. The DESI Program is a U.S. Navy partnership with South American countries and supports their diesel-electric submarine operations and fleet readiness events in operating areas off the U.S. east and west coasts.
