John A Pitts

Dr. John A. Pitts is the Command Historian, U.S. Southern Command, a position he has held since May 1991.  Before entering Federal Service, he worked on contract for NASA, writing a book on the history of the medical aspects of the manned space program, and as an Instructor in the History of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Pitts received his B.A. in History and Chemistry from Northwestern University; his M.A. in the History of Science and Modern European History from the University of Utah; and his Ph.D. in the History and Sociology of Science, Technology, and Medicine from the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Pitts served his country as a commissioned officer in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam Era. A Special Investigations and Counterintelligence Officer, he separated with the rank of Captain.
