Tradewinds 2019

​Tradewinds 2019 is a Caribbean-focused training exercise designed to help participants better respond to natural disasters and land and maritime threats. The training will be conducted May 30 - June 21 in two main phases in the Dominican Republic and St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and a key leader seminar during a final phase in Doral, Fla. The exercise includes U.S. military and security agency personnel who will train with counterparts from 21 partner nations.

Tradewinds 2019 Overview

Tradewinds is a U.S. Southern Command-sponsored combined joint exercise conducted with partner nations to enhance the collective ability of defense forces and constabularies to counter transnational organized crime and conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster relief operations, while developing strong relationships and reinforcing human rights awareness. This exercise dates back to the mid-1980s.

Tradewinds 2019 will be conducted in three phases: Phase I in the Dominican Republic; Phase II in St. Vincent and the Grenadines; and Phase III, in Doral, Florida. These phases, in additional to enhancing cooperative ties among participating nations, will build skills in maritime interdiction, ground security, and interagency cooperation.

Participants

About 1,600 personnel will take part in all phases of the exercise. In Phase I there will be approximately 800 military and 10 civilian personnel and in Phase II there will be approximately 450 military and 340 civilian personnel. 

Nations Involved

Dominican Republic (host, phase I), St. Vincent and the Grenadines (host, phase II), Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, Canada, Colombia, Dominica, France, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Mexico, the Netherlands, St. Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United Kingdom. 

Participating regional organizations include the Regional Security System (RSS), Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA), and CARICOM.

U.S. Forces Involved

U.S. participation includes U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Navy, U.S. Army, and U.S. Army National Guard.
