NAMRU SOUTH Hosts Gen. Richardson for Tour of Research Facilities
LIMA, Peru (Sept. 15, 2023) Gen. Laura Richardson, commander, U.S. Southern Command, greets Rear Admiral Jorge Enrique Andaluz Echevarría, Surgeon General of the Peruvian Navy, outside U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) SOUTH. Richardson visited NAMRU SOUTH research facilities as part of a three-day tour of operations throughout Peru, to learn about the command’s ongoing research efforts between the U.S. and its partner nations in the SOUTHCOM region. NAMRU SOUTH, part of the Naval Medical Research & Development enterprise, conducts research on a wide range of infectious diseases of military and public health significance, and supports Global Health Engagement through surveillance of those diseases, including dengue fever, malaria, diarrheal diseases and sexually transmitted infections.
