United States Completes First Maritime Vessel Upgrade in Dominica

On Monday, February 1, work was completed on the first of Dominica Marine Unit’s two nearshore intercept vessels, as part of a US$800,000 modernization initiative to upgrade the Commonwealth of Dominica Police Force’s fleet. The SAFE Boat Mid-Life Upgrade included a complete vessel overhaul, new engines, and a spare parts package to ensure continued operability. Work has already begun to upgrade the Marine Unit’s second vessel, which is expected to be completed by mid-March.

U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) recognized a team of subject-matter experts providing technical assistance to maritime-security forces in the Caribbean March 8 after the team earned a Department of Defense award for “excellence in maintenance training, advice, and assistance of foreign security forces.”

When it comes to combating transnational criminal organizations in the Caribbean and securing America’s borders, the cooperation with partner nations in the region continues to thrive. This relationship was tangible as representatives from Jamaica, Barbados, Trinidad and Tobago, St. Kitts and Nevis, Bahamas, and the United States gathered at U.S. Coast Guard Sector Key West, Florida, to exchange ideas, best practices and maintenance concepts for short range patrol craft and coastal security boats.
