Lt. Gen. Pettus Assumes Command of SOUTHCOM; Adm. Holsey Retires

Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey relinquished duties as commander of U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) to Air Force Lt. Gen. Evan L. Pettus during a ceremony at the command’s headquarters Dec. 12 in Doral, Florida. Holsey is retiring after more than 37 years of service in the U.S. Navy.

Admiral Holsey’s Steady Leadership Reshapes Security Across the Western Hemisphere

MIAMI, Florida — Inside the office of U.S. Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey hung a framed letter. It was easy to overlook, but it was on display nonetheless. The paper inside is slightly faded and signed decades ago by a man who once told a young college student that he could become a Naval officer and a pilot. The letter offered an opportunity, and Adm. Holsey believed it. That belief grew into a Navy career defined by results and the quiet confidence of a leader who cared more about the mission and the people than recognition.

The commander of U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey, visited the Dominican Republic Aug. 7 – 8, 2025, and met with top defense leaders to reaffirm the longstanding military partnership between both nations.

Panamanian and U.S. medical experts change lives aboard the USNS Comfort

COLÓN, Panama — For three years, Jesús, a local bus driver from Colón, wore a cap to hide the large, painful scars on his ears. The disfigurement was a lingering reminder of a devastating vehicle accident that changed his life. This week aboard the Mercy-class hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20), he received reconstructive surgery that marked a new beginning, thanks to a combined team of U.S. and Panamanian medical professionals.

CENTAM Guardian participants demonstrate increased capacities in culminating event

CENTAM Guardian 2025, an annual exercise co-sponsored by U.S. Southern Command and Guatemala's Ministry of Defense, neared its conclusion with a culminating event held May 22 at Mariscal Zavala military base in Guatemala City.

Cyber Exercise Southern Defender 2025 Bolsters Partner Nation Defense Capabilities

U.S. and Partner nation forces concluded participation in Southern Defender (SD) 2025 May 9. SD25 is a defensive cyber operations exercise designed to enhance cybersecurity capabilities across the U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) area of responsibility. Approximately 320 participants from 20 Latin American and Caribbean countries engaged in intensive training and practical exercises across 15 locations focused on mitigating cyber threats.
