Trump Visits Southern Command for Briefing on Campaign Against Drug Traffickers

President Donald J. Trump travelled to Florida this morning for a briefing on what he said has been a successful operation to cut the flow of illegal drugs into the United States. Defense Secretary Dr. Mark T. Esper accompanied the president to U.S. Southern Command headquarters, where Trump was briefed on the campaign against drug traffickers. The whole-of-government and international operation against international drug cartels involves 16 federal agencies and 20 international partners.

Right-Sizing, Not Reduction at Guantanamo, Southcom Commander Says

Since the Guantanamo Bay detention camp stood up in 2002, nearly 780 prisoners have been housed there. Today, the facility holds just 40 men, one who has been convicted and 39 others who are detainees, said Navy Adm. Craig S. Faller, commander of U.S. Southern Command. Now, there are plans to adjust operations at the facility to reflect this new reality.

Brazilian President to Visit U.S. Southern Command

Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro will take part in a historic visit to U.S. Southern Command March 7. Bolsonaro will meet with U.S. Navy Adm. Craig Faller, as well as other command leaders to discuss the growing defense-cooperation partnership between Brazil and the United States. During the visit, the U.S. and Brazil will sign a bilateral Agreement on Research Development, Test, and Evaluation Projects.

Latin American Air Force cadets tour US, build partnerships throughout the hemisphere

Future leaders of 11 Latin American Air Forces visited 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern) on the tail-end of their visit through the United States, as part of the Latin American Cadet Initiative. The twenty-two cadets represented air forces from Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay.

Navy Hospital Ship Deploying to Help Venezuelan Refugees

The U.S. is sending a hospital ship to aid in the refugee crisis resulting from instability in Venezuela. At the annual Washington Conference on the Americas at the State Department, Vice President Mike Pence announced the Navy hospital ship USNS Comfort will deploy to the U.S. Southern Command area of operations next month.
