Chile’s Top Military Officer Visits SOUTHCOM

Chilean Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Adm. Pablo Niemann Figari visited U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) April 23, 2025, to meet with SOUTHCOM commander, U.S. Navy Adm. Alvin Holsey, and command leaders to discuss security cooperation.

In addition to meeting with Holsey, Niemann also took part in briefings and discussions on current U.S. military efforts in Latin America and the Caribbean and the longstanding U.S.-Chilean security partnership.

The United States and Chile share a strong defense partnership and commitment to regional security. Both nations routinely take part in bilateral and multinational training engagements.

Last year, Chile hosted naval forces from the United States and 24 partner nations for the multinational training exercise, UNITAS 2024. The annual UNITAS is the world’s longest-running multinational maritime training exercise.

Chile is also a regional leader and trusted partner in space. The nation shares a strong partnership with U.S. Space Command focused on the safe, sustainable and responsible use of space that is integral to regional security and the secure use of digital, scientific, telecommunications, economic, and navigation tools.

Chile remains one of the United States’ most important security partners due to strong bilateral military relations, as well as its leadership in promoting regional security cooperation, defense collaboration, and multinational partnerships.

SOUTHCOM is one of the nation’s six geographically focused unified commands with responsibility for U.S. military operations in the Caribbean, Central America and South America, as well as security cooperation with defense and public-security forces in the region.
