Joint Task Force-Guantanamo Change of Command

Army Col. Matthew Jemmott relinquished command of Joint Task Force Guantanamo (JTF-GTMO) to Army Col. Steven Kane, during a ceremony Feb. 7, 2024, at Naval Station Guantanamo Bay.

The ceremony was presided over by the Military Deputy Commander for U.S. Southern Command, U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Alvin Holsey.

“It’s been the honor of my career to lead this incredible team of selfless Warfighters. No matter what your opinions are of the JTF mission, there is no doubt to the professionalism and sacrifices of this team. I know they will continue to excel under Kane and will provide him the same world class support from which I benefited,” said Jemmott.

“It is truly an honor to be a part of this group of Warfighters. The importance of this mission does not escape me, but the professionals of the JTF are ready for the challenge. I am also excited to be a part of a Naval Station Community with such a long history of excellence,” said Kane.

Kane’s previous assignment at JTF-GTMO include Battalion Commander of the 525th Military Police Battalion.  He most recently was assigned as the Chief of Staff with the Joint Staff/J-7.

He is the 20th commander of JTF-GTMO, and the second Army Colonel to lead the organization.
